What changes with the new UKCA marking after Brexit compared to the CE marking used before?

- After the UK left the EU by the end of 2020, new rules apply in 2021 for bringing goods into the UK market.
- From January 1, 2021, companies that bring goods into the UK from the EU and Switzerland will become “importers” and will have to meet the new regulations for importers.
- From 1 January 2021, EU „harmonised standards“ become UK „designated standards“. These can be BS EN, EN, EN ISO or EN IEC standards. Initially the list is identical and references the same EN standards as before.
- From 1 January 2021, Notified Bodies in the UK became “Approved Bodies”. The same body numbers have been retained as used previously as for Notified Bodies. UK Approved Bodies will not be able to certify equipment under EU Legislation.
- The time from January 1 2021 and December 31, 2021 will be a year’s grace period where the CE mark can still be used in the UK.
- From 1 January 2022, equipment being placed on the GB market must be UKCA marked according to UK desiganted standards. All these products require a third-party conformity assessment and the conformity assessment must be carried out by a UK approved body.
